We once went for Halibut out of Whittier which is between Anchorage and Homer. The outfitters was "Alaska Eco Tours" and the trip was awesome and highly recommended. I never thought the ocean could be like glass but it was for our Halibut excursion. We just ran out and anchored in 300 feet of water ...

So we should report beaver dams in SE MN to the DNR? It seems that the view on beavers and trout streams keeps changing over the years in MN. I'm sure I saw a beaver impoundment in WW st park on little trout run that looked like it was encouraged but that may be gone now. I know they actually use be...

Randy, where did you get those 'bug collars'? That is something I have not yet seen and I thought I had seen every tying material under the sun. BTW for pink squirrels you need something that will stay pink and not turn dull when wet for the collar. A few years ago I tied a batch with some pink dubb...

Peacock herl is indeed a PITA to work with due to its fragile nature but its fish attracting ability is hard to deny. I too tend to sub Arizona peacock dubbing these days because it is alot easier to work with and it is cool stuff and the fish seem to like it as well. Just an interesting little tidb...

Re: Anybody have a Mahogany Dun recipe?

I wouldn't say that size 16 was too big for that particular hatch, only that all my olive colored imitations were rejected and I hammered the fish with a mahogany colored body. The next time I venture onto Trout Run in Oct. I shall definitely have some mahogany colored patterns on me. I could also b...

Re: Anybody have a Mahogany Dun recipe?

I got into a mayfly emergence on Trout Run last year in the first week of Oct. I thought they were BWO but I couldn't buy a take on any BWO pattern in my fly boxes. Just then my fishing buddy Carl (whom I was not fishing with) walks up behind me and tells me they are mahogany duns and he got into th...

If you plan to fish the Kenai river, you should find a guide and float it. I can't help you with a guide because the cheap crowd I go to AK with never wants to pay a guide. We tried to wade fish the Kenai a few years ago and it is just too darn big for that. There is also alot of bear activity in th...

Randy, I saw a 10' 3wt Greys fly rod in a shop out west and I liked the way it felt from just wiggling it in the shop. Later, Feathercraft had it on sale at a pretty deep discount and I picked it up. I will say it is a real pleasure to tight line nymph with a 10 foot rod. I don't have any problems c...

Re: January 19, 2014 Trip Report

I didn't see any risers in the stretch I fished but I heard that there might have been one farther downstream. There weren't a lot of winter midges hatching, just enough to get some neat pics of bugs in the snow. If I had thought trout were targeting them I would have put on a zebra midge or if ther...

Re: January 19, 2014 Trip Report

I got out yesterday as well. It was a great cure for cabin fever and bugs were hatching.
