It's definitely not too early. I was into fish last weekend. There are steelhead, lake run browns (and the resident fish), as well as salmon. With the increase in water, there should be quite a few fish in the rivers this weekend.

Go to eBay and find yourself a Whiting Introductory pack. They come with 4 half capes, and you'll get hundreds and hundreds of flies out them. I'd find one that has grizzly, brown, medium dun, and black (or an extra grizzly).

I use a fly almost identical to that when fishing carp, Brntrout. The only difference is that I rib it with copper, and incorporate rubber legs, and lead.

That's probably what I'll do during the warmer months as well. Right now, they just stay clipped to my jacket.

I upgraded to it from the Orvis Safe Passage sling, which i disliked. A few things about the pack that stick out to me is t...

For me it's basically just a wind thing. I hate the wind. If the temps are cold enough where I think shelf ice will be a problem I won't go out either though. I'm hoping to get out onto the streams on Tuesday this week though.

FWIW - I've been fairly pleased with my Okuma SLV's drag system. I've never had a trout spool me, but I have had carp do it. And those fish, more than almost anything that swims in freshwater, will test your drag. For a $40 reel, it's smooth and has plenty of stopping power. Saying that, it doesn't ...
