Re: Mayfly Numbers Drop in Half

Justin, A few questions. How is baseline IBI data established when most of the IBI work occurred after significant loss of many different invertebrate species had already happened? I would assume baseline data has to be developed using what's present today for species, not what we assume was presen...

Re: Stream report 1/28

Fished 1230-1430 on Monday of this week. Air temp was in the low 20s. Did not get to double digits; picked up generally speaking one fish per "stop" nymphing at each deep run or hole. I saw one big fish in a sheet of broken water; saw it flash while it ate something. I drifted to it and was intently...

Re: Mayfly Numbers Drop in Half

To this point, it'd be very valuable to have bug data going back to the 1980s or beyond. Part of the Clean Water Fund money as you know is being used to get fish and bug data on pretty much every "named" stream in MN. So going forward we will have bug IBIs for the entire Driftless at least every ten...

Re: Stream Conditions

Think I will head out this afternoon; probably go for smaller water. I'm guessing the bigger stuff is somewhat fishable but still turbid. I'd rather swing softies or search with dry fly than streamer fish I guess is what it comes down to at this point.

Re: Stream Conditions

Buddy fished south of 90 yesterday and he found the "medium" sized water to be turbid. Anyone have any reports heading into tomorrow and weekend? Gauge suggests MB WW should be good. NB WW still hanging a little higher, and knowing that stream's tendency to stay turbid longer during receding flows, ...

Re: Any hatch updates?

Fished yesterday and today north of 90. With my kid who just turned 12. Main goal was to get him fish. Absolute murder with caddis dries and softies swinging down to the feeding fish. Basically seemed like unlimited trout were ready to eat. We stopped fishing them and went home today around 1 pm. Sa...

Donna Rasmussen is retiring

FYI Her last day at Fillmore SWCD will be soon. Many conservation-minded folks on this board. Safe to say no matter what you think of HI work, watershed conservation work, etc. you'd be hard-pressed to not acknowledge that Donna's decades of work for the betterment of Fillmore County (and beyond) ha...

Re: 1/6/19 report

Was out same day with my kid. Mainly guiding him (or bothering him depending on who you ask). We fished popular water north of 90 from around 10 AM to 1230 PM. We were fishing behind someone and there were folks behind us too. He struggled a bit remembering his roll cast; kept trying it without enou...

Re: 2019 Trips

Hopefully Columbia River in May
Lake Michigan June
BWCA August (has always been Sept but kids' sports/school now dictate August)

Main thing I need to do is catch some trout. All these extensions of the deer season have kept me off the streams.

We've got different entities doing different things out there in terms of habitat and stream work. I don't have a lot of direct experience with any of it, but from my perspective it seems we would benefit from some effort to evaluate (1) the purposes/goals and (2) accordingly, where/how to apply eac...
